The Importance of Preserving Spaces in the DTES

Steven Johnston CIRES Executive Director for the Vancouver Sun

This article is a reminder that investing in community-driven spaces is key to building equitable and inclusive neighbourhoods.

In a recent article from the Vancouver Sun and The Province, hear from our Executive Director, Steven Johnston, as he discusses the impact that the potential closure of essential businesses at Woodward’s could have on the Downtown Eastside (DTES) and the void it may create for the community.

“People need places to shop, work, and socialize. Right now, we don’t have those to the degree that we would benefit from them. And that type of investment is what will help propel the Downtown Eastside into the next best version of itself.”

At Community Impact Real Estate Society (CIRES), we believe that preserving and revitalizing community-oriented spaces is essential to creating resilient, inclusive neighbourhoods. Through our work in the DTES, we strive to provide local businesses, non-profits, and social enterprises with access to affordable, well-managed commercial spaces.

This article is a reminder that every space matters—and investing in community-driven spaces is key to building equitable and inclusive neighbourhoods.
